Dear Families, Welcome to Room 17! We are very excited to be here and are looking forward to an exciting and productive year. This year your child has the opportunity to have not only 1, but 2 teachers. Each of us will be able to focus on specific areas of curriculum, therefore providing your student with a rich, stimulating second grade year. Lunchtime will be when we transition the class. Mrs. Himaka will be teaching Language Arts (reading, writing, language, etc.) in the morning. Mrs. Scantlin will be teaching Math, Science, Social Studies, etc. after lunch. We have a very full schedule planned for your second grader this year. Working together as a team we can accomplish this. Students that have a strong home school connection achieve at a higher level. To insure a pleasant learning environment for every student in room 17, the following rules have been established: 1. Be respectful: Show kindness in everything you do and say. 2. Be responsible: Do what needs to be done without being told. 3. Be a good listener: Use your whole body when listening and raise your hand to speak. 4. Be a problem solver: Think about how you can find the answer before asking for help. 5. Be a risk-taker: Challenge yourself to try new things and always do your best. We use many rewards and incentives for good behavior as we feel positive reinforcement is the most successful and effective form of classroom discipline. Please let your child know that you support these rules and standards. The classroom rules are reinforced with a color card system. Each child begins each day with a green card. When a child chooses to make a poor choice, his/her card is turned to the next color. The cards are as follows: GREEN- Great Day! YELLOW- Warning! BLUE- Time Out. RED- Note/phone call home. HOMEWORK Each child should have a folder with two pockets inside labeled “Leave at Home” and “Return to School”. It is very important that this folder accompany them to school every day. Please refer to the attached homework schedule. HOMEWORK CALENDAR/WEEKLY READING LISTS The best way to become a better reader is to read. So, each Friday, a Reading List will be sent home on the back of the pink Homework Calendar. Please read at least 5 out of the 7 days of the week, at least 20 minutes each night. Circle the days read, write the title of the book, the number of minutes, and sign the bottom. Reading Lists are due the following Friday. We expect a minimum of 100 minutes of reading per week. PARENT VOLUNTEERS
Parents are the most important people in their child’s life. You are always welcome in the classroom to help or observe. We only ask that you postpone your visits until we are able to get settled in our routines. We will be notifying parents when we are ready for volunteers. We look forward to meeting and seeing all of you throughout the year. SCHOOL TIMES School begins promptly at 8:00 am. It is extremely important to be at school on time. Student supervision begins at 7:45 am. School is dismissed at 2:00 pm. You may pick up your student outside of the classroom or at the crosswalk in the parking circle. It is important for you and your child to have a plan for the end of the day. Students not picked up by 2:15 pm will be taken to the office to insure their safety. BIRTHDAYS Students are welcome to bring a small treat to share with the class. Please send a note or an email ahead of time so we can be prepared. Birthdays will be celebrated at the end of the day. If you have any questions or any specific information about your child that we need to know, please feel free to email or leave us a message at school. Sincerely, Dawn Himaka and Becky Scantlin (619) 588-3134 mrshimaka@yahoo.com scantlin@cajonvalley.net
